HOME OFFICE EXPENSES CLAIM FOR TAX
Have you been ‘locked-down’ working from home due to COVID-19? If you worked from home for more than 50% of your total working hours or more than six months in the tax year (starting from 1 March 2020) then you may be able to claim home office expenses in your 2021 tax return.
First things first!
To claim for home office expenses, you need to meet the minimum requirements. Read further to find out if you qualify:
Do you qualify for Home Office Expense?
• You must have spent more than half of your total working hours working from your home office.
• Your employer must provide you with a letter stating that you can work from home. and confirm the percentage (%) of time you spent there.
• You must have an area of your home exclusively used and set up for this purpose.
• Your office must be specifically equipped with the relevant instruments, tools and equipment needed for you to do your job
Do you meet the requirements? This is what you can claim.
Whether you are a commission earner or normal salaried employee you may be able to claim a portion of the following expenses:
• Rent or interest on bond
• Repairs to the premises
• Rates and taxes
• Water and electricity
• Cleaning
• Internet
• Wear and tear on office equipment and all other expenses relating to your house only.
If you are a commission earner and your commission makes up more than 50% of your total remuneration, then in addition to the expenses listed above, you can also claim other commission related business expenses like telephone, stationery, repairs to printer etc.
